The fog of war…
I seldom have anything good to say about the Old Gray Lady, but the New York Times has a first-rate piece on the WikiLeaks document release on Afghanistan.
I haven’t found anything very surprising in what I’ve read about the documents thus far — a war looks different from every viewing angle. It is worth noting that the data dump was all the excuse many Democrats needed to vote against war funding. One wonders where the hell they’ve been for the past few years to be so unaware that Pakistan is playing a triple game, that Afghan troops are illiterate. But it does show that all of them were lying, His Oneness included, when they were wailing that Iraq was a bad war and Afghanistan a good one and see, that proved they aren’t anti-war, anti-military, anti-U.S.
By the way, the WikiLeaks founder is not the good government hero he presents himself as. However, he did offer the documents to the White House before releasing them, but got no response. Now the names of hundreds of Afghans who’ve been cooperating with us are out in the open.
Incompetence mixed with indifference is a deadly combination.
