Trees — do you…

leave a comment »

…wonder about them?   Robert Frost did,  poetically,  and now a large number  of scientists  are studying and using less invasive technologies to answer some questions and correct some past  “settled science.”   As in most areas,  we are finding out how little we actually know about the lives of trees.  Even if you think you won’t be interested,  you will be.

And the truly delicious part is that after reading only a few paragraphs,  you will know more than the eco-Nazis,  including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Speed bag Sanders…

leave a comment »

We all know Bernie Sanders likes to punch up and to the left,  but a simple speed bag managed to punch back when the Senator hit it with his right hand.   The brief  video is  very entertaining,  not least because Bernie seems genuinely astonished that Newton’s Third  Law is  actually true.

Stromboli, anyone?

No,  I don’t mean the Italian turnover stuffed with delicious meats and cheeses,  and sometimes veggies.  That is a treat worthy of mention and gustatory pleasure under any circumstances.   No,  I refer to the volcano of  the same name, on a small island off the coast of Sicily,  which has just popped its cork again after killing a hiker in its previous eruption in July.   Volcanoes are fascinating to observe,  but dangerous as hell.

Cranky Bernie…

leave a comment »

Why is the  owner of  this restaurant surprised that Sen. Bernie Sanders was cranky and rude?   Bernie is a Democratic Socialist,  and none of them think ordinary people are worth their time and attention,  or even ordinary civility.   I am sure Mr. Konstin will vote for another Democratic candidate,  but at least he won’t be offering any encouragement to the Vermont Senator.

I’m mean…

…because I take joy in hearing that the New York Times main office in Manhattan was  treated for  a bed bug infestation over the weekend.   Even more amusing is that the newspaper’s wellness center is one of the affected areas.   Can we now claim that lying,  bias,  nti-Semitism and pomposity lead to bed bugs?   Would you be surprised to find roaches and mice as well?

Sleep standards…

leave a comment »

The federal government thinks your thermostat should be set  to 82 degrees  when you sleep?   Have any of these blithering idiots ever been to the Deep South?  At that temperature,  you’d probably sweat yourself off the bed,  assuming your didn’t drown first.

UPDATE:  Energy Secretary Rick Perry just told us to set our thermostats  wherever we  like.    There is a shred of common sense left in the Swamp.

If you have nothing…

…better to do than  scream at  a chicken sandwich,  please shut up and go home so the rest of us can eat in peace.    Apparently the latest round of invective against Chick-fil-A was incited by the fast-food chain Popeyes announcing it had added a new fried chicken sandwich to its menu.   One writer (I don’t regard Helen Rosner as a  journalist)  is very excited by America’s favorite  being put down by the appeal of Popeyes  “…as a chicken sandwich with less overt moral compromise.”

Silly me — I had no idea chicken sandwiches even had morals,  much less that they could be compromised.   I was,  however,  well ware that progressives would assign morals to a concrete block without hesitation to suit their purposes.

David Koch, R.I.P.

leave a comment »

The Left unsurprisingly  expressed joy  at the news of the libertarian billionaire’s death.   If you made a single comment a fraction as horrid as any of these, the Left would be after you with pitchforks.   I have never been a huge fan of the libertarian viewpoint,  but I do think it has some things right.  Isn’t it strange that the Left screams bloody murder about the money the Koch brothers expend on political and social causes,  but never utters a peep about George Soros spending billions to put the Secretaries of State and Attorneys Generals he desires in place at the state level?

The brothers also supported conservative causes when it dovetailed with their libertarian instincts,  which was far too often to suit progressives.   You have to remember that progressives think only they should have the money and power to remake America and enslave its people and neither of the Koch brothers chose to obey their opponents’ dictates.  The Left hates that both men have donated huge sums  to charities,  because private philanthropy takes power away from government.

Whatever else he was,  David Koch was a power  voice for  and promoter of liberty.

New wall works!

leave a comment »

Democratic elites are constantly telling us that walls don’t work,  despite depending on walls and other such keep-out mechanisms to protect their own properties.   Now we have a new section of border wall,  and  video  showing illegal migrants attempting to scale the wall,  completely failing, and scampering back into Mexico.

Any questions?

Make it permanent?

leave a comment »

I’m referring to Daylight Savings Time.  This year at least 36 states have introduced legislation to end or study the practice of switching back and forth.  Some favor all-year standard time,  but most want permanent DST because it provides  an extra hour  of sunlight for more of the year.

Back in the days when there were many more farmers,  the extra hour of light  made it possible for school children to help out in the fields.  You’d be arrested for child abuse in most places these days,  but in certain farming areas, children can still earn money by  performing what was once a family and/or community chore.   If you farmed in the Deep South, that extra hour of daylight meant you could eat and rest during the heat of the day,  then come back and finish your chores in slightly less sweltering circumstances.   If you’ve ever been to the South in August you know what a difference a few degrees can make.

On the other hand,  parents object to sending their children off to school in the darkness.   I understand their point of view,  but having grown up in the countryside,  I rode a county school bus to school.  It wasn’t always pleasant walking down a very long driveway to catch the bus,  but if the weather was really bad,  one of my parents would drive the six-tenths of a mile and wait until the bus appeared.  I must confess that I sometimes escaped the afternoon walk by hopping on one of our horses and riding it back to the pasture nearer the house.

I do think it would be useful to pick one time system or the other,  so that everyone always knows how it works.
