Halloween 2017…

leave a comment »

Halloween should be light-hearted  and fun,  but the  social justice jerks are out in full force.   To which I reply we should all  carve pumpkins  with a Henry rifle or some  other firearm.     You might skip this in some areas, like  Salem,  Massachusetts,   where police are already on alert.  If you’re still decorating,  try these ghosts  or a  spider web   or some  spooky silhouettes    or masks.   The White House has  finished its  decorating and it looks great.

October 31st is also the date Martin Luther  launched the  Protestant Reformation but if you don’t feel like studying that,  enjoy  this historical collection of Halloween pranks and such,  then marvel at  7,000 Jack O’Lanterns.   Or take a gander at Debby Witt’s  collection of  scary stuff at The Corner of National Review Online.   Appropriate as you see fit,  because it’s  really appreciation,  and proceed to enjoy the evening as it should be celebrated!   Don’t behave like these  miserable miscreants.  even to provide a few chuckles for your local police.

Stale bagel…

You may not remember the New York City of old,  which Taki Theodoracopulos describes  so vividly here,  but  I do,  having visited a couple of times a decade for quite a few decades.   The big city was always loud and rather rude,  but always lively and with a peculiar freshness created by its ethnic neighborhoods.   Now it is just a busy,  crowded  large city with a dull saneness one is not supposed to notice.   It is,  in fact,  boring.

Amazon wants your front door keys…

leave a comment »

Have I ever bought anything from Amazon.com?   Of course I have.    Do I want Amazon to be able to  enter my home  to  leave a package  when no one is around?   Hell,  no!   Of course,  I live in the country,  where no one is likely to steal anything from my doorstep or porch.   My neighbors,  to the extent I have any,  all know I have a concealed carry permit and the skill and training to use it,  and that if called upon,  I show up with a weapon,   a cell phone and a very large dog.

But not to worry  —  if you don’t want to allow Amazon entry to your home,  you could alternatively let them into  your car  trunk.   My primary vehicle is a truck,  which has no trunk,  but I’m not letting Amazon into my vehicle ,  either.

Move to Candela…

…and Nicola Gatta,  the mayor of this quaint medieval Italian town,  will pay you.  As an incentive,  he reminds us that the town used to be called Little Naples until the 1960’s when the bustling community began falling out of favor with tourists,  then residents.

I hope the mayor’s initiative pays off grandly so the Baroque heart of the town lives on, with a decent number of people to provide a tax base.  Since one has to live there and rent a house there,  it might be hard to arrange sufficient income to be comfortable,  but it’s not far from beaches and is set in a beautiful lush landscape,  so it might be worth a try.

Fats Domino, R.I.P.

leave a comment »

The New Orleans native was a rock and roll legend for nearly half a century, but he could  —  and did–  play other styles as well.  He was short and stout,  but had a mellow voice and an easy manner that played well live and on vinyl.   He had disappeared from public life  — I was in fact surprised that he was still alive  — but he made it to aged 89  before dying of natural causes this week.

Low fat pigs…

As much as I distrust China, it would be lovely if they are really onto something here.   I like my bacon crisp, but wouldn’t it be wonderful if it hit the skillet with a quarter less fat than usual?

Carter unbound…

I am no fan of former President Jimmy Carter,  who I view as the second worst president in the history of our nation,  Barack Obama being the worst of all time.   But every once in a great while he actually makes a sensible observation.   Still,  one must never lose sight of how far left Carter is and  how wrong  he is about much of the universe.

China’s economy explained…

leave a comment »

For those of us who find China’s pronouncements about its closed economy as understandable and clear as the Federal Reserve’s ruminations about the U.S. economy,  Sundance at Conservative Treehouse offers  some timely  explanations.

If you can do basic math,  something apparently quite beyond most politicians,  the very premise of a centrally planned economy strikes you as very odd indeed.   How can it work?   Short answer — it can’t,  and it doesn’t unless you are a good enough bully to insure that the flows of your desired materials continues.   You should be cheered by Sundance’s take that Trump and his cabinet understand the inherent weaknesses of China along with other command economies,  and are skillfully applying pressure to the weakest points to increase our leverage.   I happen to agree.

Trump is a businessman and entrepreneur,  and he has successfully completed projects in some of the world’s toughest venues,  so he has a much better than average understanding of economies and their weak points.   You need not understand much of this to realize that China is responding to the Trump Administration’s moves because it has realized it is dealing with a very,  very different sort of president than it had with His Oneness.

She’s never gone…

There is an old  country song  by Dan and the Hot Licks which asks “How can I miss you when you won’t go away?  I very much doubt Hillary Clinton has ever heard of it,  much less listened to it,  but it should be her eternal theme song,  because she won’t go away either.   Peggy  Ryan absolutely nails the former First Lady  here.

UPDATE:  The American Spectator takes it a  step further.
