Halloween 2019…

leave a comment »

Halloween is a fine time to  examine Martin  Luther,  the religious reformer.  We could use a couple of him now,  as people either eschew religion of any sort or are prone to claim their religion absolves them of whatever behavior general society frowns upon.

You still have time to travel to the  scary stays  Airbnb has sourced for you.   You may want to drop a note to Federal District Judge Marc Treadwell, who took 25 pages to rule that the Butts County, GA sheriff’s office provided no evidence that the sex offenders posed any risk of harm to trick-or-treaters.   The sheriff has wanted to put up [posters warning trick or treaters to avoid the location.    The judge hoped that children would be safe,  despite his having ruled that convicted sex offenders’ constitutional rights are more important than protecting children.  Perhaps some local parents will convince him otherwise, as the judge does not appear to know that most counties have online sources that allow you to search for registered sex offenders in a certain area.

NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory took  a photo  of a flaming sun.   The high-resolution  shot is  even more of a jack-o’-lantern on fire.   The  chefs aboard  Air Force One got into the spirit by giving stuffed peppers jack-o’-lantern faces.  The reporter liked that,  despite her snarkiness, but seemed to have trouble identifying what appears to be baked chicken fricassee.  She may have never eaten it  before,  but she threw in an Ina Garten reference just to let us know what a sophisticated foodie she is.

The White House was  beautifully decorated  with loads of pumpkins and black branches wrapped around the columns.   The First Lady could have been  an artful  decoration all by herself.   She and the President looked delighted to be handing  out treats  to the assorted fairies and hobgoblins assembled.

I hope bad weather doesn’t dampen your planned Halloween festivities,  and that all your trick or treaters return safe and happy and not yet in sugar shock.

Dynastic bust?

leave a comment »

The totally unlamented death of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi set me thinking about dynasties.   China and North Korea were the two nations I thought capable of establishing a family destined to rule,  but as this article so clearly points out, being worthy of consideration for marrying into a dynastic family also means you’re first in line for  being murdered  if another power wishes to achieve that goal in your place.

President Xi was probably wise to send his only daughter back to Harvard to study further.  She is much safer at that institution,  as awful as it may be,  than she would ever be in China.  If I were her,  I would not be likely to leave the United States again,  and I would certainly never set foot in China again.  China already has a war going on between entrepreneurs and the government, and no one should be under any illusion that the communist government will hesitate to aggressively attack those it perceives to be acting in their own self-interest rather than that of the government.   Communism and socialism  always have very rich and powerful people at the top, standard misery for everyone else,  and it never ends well for the common man,  does it.

Old iPhones or iPads?

Then you have only until Saturday to update their software by midnight on Saturday or risk having your devices forced offline.   Apple says the issue is caused by a GPS clock reset,  which happens every 19 years,  and that you were warned about it in April.   Your phone apparently won’t blow up,  it just won’t be able to connect to the internet.   Too bad,  Apple users!

China harvesting…

leave a comment »

The Communist government of China has long been accused of harvesting the organs of unwilling donors, which it has always denied.   It still denies it,  but the survivors tell a  far different  tale,  and many of them belong to the Falun Gong,  a religious minority long persecuted for adhering to a Buddhist-centric religious philosophy grounded in meditation and compassion.

For Communists,  the only permitted religion is worship of the state,  something which the Democratic Party now shares with both communism and socialism.   China makes money off this organ harvesting,  a lot of it,  and its much vaunted economy is failing.  China is now spending its cash on food,  not basic manufacturing materials from abroad.  The county has for many years struggled to feed its citizens.   It used to shrug at thousands dying of starvation and disease,  but there are too many cell phones now for officials to easily cover up such disasters.  That is why I buy absolutely nothing made in China — I refuse to allow my hard-earned money to support such a regime.

True community activists…

leave a comment »

The Amish gather to  lift and move  an entire barn.  The internet goes wild,  but it happens often enough to draw no special attention in that community,  just as neighbors showing up to  harvest an  ailing farmer’s crops isn’t that big of a deal amongst farmers.   People in true communities actually help each other without expecting TV cameras and breathless reporters to show up.   In fact,  they prefer no attention,  because they are merely doing what they consider to be the right thing.   That is the kind of community activist I prefer,  not the whiny hipster lefties filling our screens and flooding our email accounts,  or the lying phonies like His Oneness.

Painted lady year…

leave a comment »

No,  I’m not talking about prostitutes plying their wares,  but the influx of half a million “painted lady” butterflies into Britain from mainland Europe.   It is the largest such event since 2009,  but it is a natural phenomenon which occurs about every decade.    You can  see here  how the insects got their popular name,  but the three-week Big Butterfly Count revealed that other common species also displayed substantial increases over the summer,  due in part to fine weather.

No sense of irony…

leave a comment »

A group of journalists want to  trademark the  term “fake news” to prevent Pres. Trump from using it.   A Florida chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists believes “a joke sometimes hits harder than the truth.”   One worries that the general public may not know “that journalists follow ethical codes and face losing our jobs and getting blacklisted by the industry if we so much as think about presenting ‘fake news.’”

If they wish to be taken seriously, they could try actually reporting facts instead of regurgitating Democratic talking points.  When one uses the exact same phrases as Democratic hit men, one can not seriously claim to have done any dogged journalistic work.  One can scarcely claim to have engaged one’s brain, or the impulse to put up a remarkably silly and whiny video would have been stillborn instead of being touted as evidence of one’s competence and professional standards.
