Organic disappointments…

with 3 comments

Of course,  it will shock you only if you haven’t been paying attention for the last decade or so.   The simple truth is that plants which are totally and truly organic spend considerable energy  fighting off  pests and diseases, which quite often results in produce which is rather ugly and not very palatable.

A bit of assistance from lavender oil or other biological treatments generally produces food which looks better and offers a full complement of nutrients.   I say this as a home gardener suffering from a much higher than customary invasion of insects all too eager to sample my fruits and veggies and herbs.   Let’s face it — anything which will eat a Thai pepper plant is a tough critter,  and frankly I don’t know what it is,  but I’m not anxious to meet it face to face.

The organic means much less than you think,  but it passes the fishing lure test,  which is that you convinced someone to buy your premise or product.   Yes,  less chemicals are better health-wise,  but if your crop fails because it lacks sufficient protection,  your health has not been helped.

You can eat organic if you wish,  but do your homework so that you know the vendors,  and what you are paying such a high price for.   You could also take a mixed approach,  as I do.  I grown some of my own food,  and much of what I buy I buy young and tender,  before the plant or critter has time to absorb much from its environment.

Warming failure…

leave a comment »

We are all doomed to roast to death according to  High Warming Priest Al Gore and his acolytes.   Except it has taken crews clearing the Lassen National Park Highway in California’s Lassen Volcanic National Park, nearly four months to handle the  snow load which had accumulated in the mountain pass.    The road will officially open next Thursday, which is the  latest opening ever  according to park logs which go back to 1931.   I presume modern equipment and crews are as efficient at the task as their predecessors were,  so shouldn’t global warming have sped the process up?

Luckenbach…

If you’re a country music fan,  you’ve heard of Luckenbach,  Texas.    The real story of  this tiny Texas  town,  especially how it became a tourist attraction,  is actually quite interesting.

Fire them!

leave a comment »

Whoever it is at the IRS who is re-hiring people who have  already washed out there should be fired themselves.

An agency should not need to formulate or amend policies and practices to avoid offering a job at the IRS to someone who cheated on his own income tax return.   One should apply a pink slip to anyone who needs to be told to avoid this action, along with his boss and his boss’s boss.   Does the phrase “mindless bureaucrat” come to mind here?

UPDATE:  They don’t even bother to  ask why  the potential rehires left the IRS.

Joseph Rago, R.I.P.

leave a comment »

Unlike Yuval Levin,  I did  not know  Joe Rago personally,  only through his exceptional writing, which often clarified arguments for me.    Even though a great deal of his output  was in  unsigned editorials and such,  I came to recognize his crisply elegant style,  and appreciated it all the more when it came to matters as complicated as ObamaCare.

The Wall Street Journal is already  the poorer  for his loss,  but you can read one of his last pieces  here.

Bridge-less beaches…

leave a comment »

No bridges means no cars, and very few tourists.  That’s another reason to like  these beaches  which are reachable only by boat,  in addition to the fact that they are just plain pretty.   And yes,  I have been to most of them at some point in my life.   I don’t spend much time on the water these days,  but I have never regretted doing so whenever I could.

Trump jamboree…

leave a comment »

The Boy Scouts always invite the sitting President to their National  Jamboree.  Barack Obama never went a single time,  though he did send a video message  once.  Trump just attended his first and received a  fine welcome  from the 40,000 or so attendees.

I have my problems with the idiots who control the national Boy Scout organization,  but at least the boys have the right ideas,  even though their enthusiastic response caused some on the Left to liken the event to the Hitler youth  rallies.

UPDATE:  The press  has now  picked up the Hitler youth references.   Would someone please explain to me how this is supposed to make the general public trust big media again?   As John Hinderaker points out,  liberals believe in nothing in the Boy Scout creed and have spent decades trying to bankrupt and destroy the organization by forcing it to accept gay leaders.   A good Boy Scout is the very opposite of a modern liberal.
