Death of Sears…
Yes, a succession of leaders failed Sears, but the last was by far the worst in my view. I have not been able to convince myself that he ever intended to “save” Sears, but he certainly enriched himself by selling off the most profitable chunks, such as Craftsman tools.
Sears doing what?
I do not understand this. Why would Sears sell its three best-known brands? It seems to me that if you wanted to grow the Kenmore, Craftsman, and Diehard brands, you would consider dumping other items or lines which are less well-known and less profitable, with less growth potential. I fear a long-time icon is disappearing into the dustbin of history.
Sears homes…
From 1908 to 1940, Sears sold between 70,000 to 75,000 homes, most in the Northeast and Midwest, with the largest grouping being in Elgin, Illinois, where one community has more than 200 verified Sears homes. Sears lost most of the sales records, but there are other ways to determine if you live in one of these custom jewels, built with then-new techniques and top-quality materials.
I am fortunate enough to have visited one, which had been extremely well maintained, as well as updated a few times, and I can see why the Sears homes were so popular. How sad that the company has fallen on such hard times nowadays.
