Tigers tamed?
Sri Lanka is now reporting that its forces have killed Tamil Tiger senior leader Vellipulai Prabhakaran, and that other leaders committed suicide in their bunkers as government forces closed in.
Congratulations to the Sri Lankan goverment, since it correctly ignored pleas from our own State Department to broker a ceasefire. Apparently we have no one at State with either a brain or a memory to enable recognition of the favorite terrorist ploy of agreeing to a cessation of hostilities when they’re getting their butts whipped, then using the time off to re-arm and agitate.
Where would they be with a negotiated peace like Nepal, which now faces a revolution from within? Is there anyone, anywhere, in the entire Obama administration able to look at the two countries, at the two vastly different outcomes, and get a useful hint for both Afghanistan and Pakistan?
Tamil Tigers demise?
Is the Sri Lankan government about to end a quarter-century of fighting against the Tamil Tigers? It looks like it, once you get past The Times (UK) headline worrying that the rebels will kill themselves rather than surrender. Quite frankly, I don’t care if they commit mass suicide, since they have slain thousands of civilians over the last 25 years and made the country nigh unfunctional. They seem to think that appealing to the Americans and British to save their asses will result in His Oneness spreading his cloak of graciousness over them.
I suspect that is Obama’s instinct, since he has a Carteresque affinity for despots and tyrants, but hopefully someone will tamp down one of his least admirable qualities.
The Sri Lankan president, Mahinda Rajapaksa, has claimed outright victory, but no matter the current disposition of the Tigers, they have sleeper cells which will no doubt continue to wage terrorist attacks when they are able.
UPDATE: The Tigers have apparently given up, though their leader remains at large.
