Lunch-less Wednesdays…
From the wonderfully creative minds at the Competitive Enterprise Institute comes this wickedly biting send-up of big-government food rules, though if you live in New York it’s not quite so funny, is it?
And it’s less funny if you’re a school district wondering how you’re going to follow the new food for kids legislation approved by Our Lady of Perpetual Dissatisfaction. What the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 actually does is serve as yet another unfunded mandate for state school systems.
However, I think the schools can make it work by announcing that all the cantaloupe, broccoli, cauliflower and other stuff few children hate will be served one day a week. They will have to prepare only about a dozen lunches, everyone else brown-bags it, and they save a bunch of money on Lunch-less Wednesdays.
I would expect nutritionists worth their salt to know that if children don’t eat squash and broccoli at home, they ain’t gonna eat it elsewhere. You’d think even idiot legislators might have noticed that about their own offspring. One of the best gifts for a new mother is a sturdy food mill so that when it’s time to start solids, her baby can eat what the family’s eating, pureed. Children need protein to grow and thrive, and many adult vegetarians are inadequately nourished.
Finally, I object to a woman built like a 1,000 pound mule hectoring her daughters and the rest of us to deny ourselves any pleasure from eating the things she is obviously still enjoying in generous helpings. I’m losing weight by eating what I like, except for sugar and high-glycemic carbs, though Thanksgiving and Christmas brought the plan to a temporary halt. I grow and eat plenty of vegetables and salads, but I also like my meat– the vegan lifestyle doesn’t work for me. You can decide for yourself — if the government nannies will let you.
