Berlin Wall, a quarter-century later…

leave a comment »

The Berlin Wall fell on November 9th,   twenty-five years ago.   If you’re too young to remember the event,  or didn’t pay much attention to it,  the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation has produced a  mini-documentary about the course of the Soviet Union and the liberating events of 1989,  which is well worth your time.

If you want to save the documentary,  this piece  has a good pictorial history of the wall.   The wall’s course was outlined  in lights  for the anniversary.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel  cites the  wall as a miracle and proof that dreams can come true,  but she made  no mention  of the role Pres. Ronald Reagan played, along with some other important characters.

Aaron Goldstein was  given a  piece of the wall this summer,  and notes that while it resulted in a reborn Germany,  it didn’t kill off Russian nationalism.   Doug Bandow acknowledges as much,  but counsels us to remain optimistic for  the future  of liberty.

His Oneness issued a fairly good  press release  to mark the occasion,  but it’s pale ale indeed when compared to Reagan’s demand of “Tear down this wall!”
