Avocado absence…
America potentially running out of avocados in three weeks if Trump closes the border is infinitely less important than the country being swamped by illegal immigrants. I am prejudiced because I dislike avocados. They are unpleasantly oily to me and have a terrible mouth feel —a mushy and squishy texture. If you are an avocado freak, you will still be able to get them, you’ll just have to pay a lot more for them to be flown in instead of trucked over the border.
On principle I always attempt to buy American-made products. I try to avoid anything from China. I also avoid most food items from Mexico, because its agricultural standards are not as high as mine, and I know the USDA checks almost none of it. That is one reason I grow so much food in my own yard — which also gives me better quality, safer comestibles, and saves money on my grocery bill.
So I’m sorry for those of you who can’t face the morning without your avocado toast, but getting Mexico’s cooperation requires putting a dent in its commerce, and closing the border is an efficient way to do it.
UPDATE: Monica Showalter, who is a huge fan of things avocado, is not fooled by the sudden panic over the greenish fruit. Don Surber targets the CEO of Mission Produce.
Oyster lovers, rejoice!
Researchers at Texas A&M University have developed a way to pasteurize raw oysters with an electron beam to reduce the chances of food poisoning from norovirus and hepatitis A. This won’t render them totally safe, of course, but safer is better, don’t you think?
