Berlin Wall, a quarter-century later…
The Berlin Wall fell on November 9th, twenty-five years ago. If you’re too young to remember the event, or didn’t pay much attention to it, the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation has produced a mini-documentary about the course of the Soviet Union and the liberating events of 1989, which is well worth your time.
If you want to save the documentary, this piece has a good pictorial history of the wall. The wall’s course was outlined in lights for the anniversary.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel cites the wall as a miracle and proof that dreams can come true, but she made no mention of the role Pres. Ronald Reagan played, along with some other important characters.
Aaron Goldstein was given a piece of the wall this summer, and notes that while it resulted in a reborn Germany, it didn’t kill off Russian nationalism. Doug Bandow acknowledges as much, but counsels us to remain optimistic for the future of liberty.
His Oneness issued a fairly good press release to mark the occasion, but it’s pale ale indeed when compared to Reagan’s demand of “Tear down this wall!”
Berlin Wall anniversary…
Is this the reason His Oneness isn’t going to Berlin for the special anniversary celebration? Does he realize vaguely that even with a herd of writers and multiple teleprompters, he will never, ever, give a speech half as good as the one Ronald Reagan gave at this place in service of liberty?
