2019 D-Day, Part IV…

Tom Rice jumped into Normandy in 1944.   75 years later  he jumped again,  this time in tandem,  but happily in daylight without bullets whizzing past him.   The 97-year-old said this time was much easier.   His six months of jump training certainly paid off,  as he seemed to have no more trouble than the current paratroopers jumping with him,  some with Second World War souvenirs, some carrying items their grandfathers took into battle.

And  here’s a photo  of a 5’3″ soldier accepting the surrender of the 7’6″ German soldier,  both of whom survived the war.   I’m grateful that someone  colorized these  images —  they allow you to more easily see details which tend to wash out in black and white.

It has been over half a century since I saw a textbook mentioning GARBO,  but you need to know about this  eccentric double  agent who fooled the Nazis on D-Day,  faked his death and went on to have another life.  The Allies owed much to Spanish national Juan Pujol Garcia.
