Anti-spam tech…
…moves closer to reality, and it can not come soon enough to suit me. No phone number is safe from spammers these days. My cell phone company correctly identifies and blocks most spam calls. I still have a landline because it is unaffected by all the trees and bad weather, and it offers no such protections. My mantra for it is if the caller ID says “unknown” the call goes unanswered. Sometimes I answer a call I suspect is spam and entertain myself by keeping them on the line forever and a day. 12 minutes seems to be the length of time allotted for boiler room employees to waste before they give up. It takes less than 2 minutes if i ask them to stay on the line for just another 30 seconds so that my computer can complete the call trace so that the court papers can be filed electronically to ensure they are served next week. If you get bombarded with these nuisance calls develop your own ways to have fun — try saying you’re with the police department and you demand to know what relationship the caller has with the deceased. I’ve been using that one this week and the hang-up is nearly instantaneous!
