Is Christmas possible?
Michael Strain wrote this a couple of years ago, but since he thought to bring it up, so will I, since it has held up well. The power of faith is demonstrated by the Christians in the Middle East, many of whom have died rather than convert. Such ancient communities exemplify faith under fire. Would any of us be so bold, so brave?
Did the wise men actually see something much larger than a subtle star which led them to the true King? Did they understand that Baby would change everything? Did they know He would be, as Billy Graham says, the greatest teacher who would ever live?
I am not sure we grasp this even now. I do know that freedom can not flourish where religion is constricted, which is why the Wall Street Journal has published the same Christmas editorial every year since 1949. Americans, even those who aren’t particularly religious, expect an acknowledgement of the reason for the season from the White House, not the faithless, lifeless pablum dribbled out by His Oneness.
Read the NRO symposium on Christmas while you’re busy making Christmas memories of your own, and spare a thought and a prayer for the first responders and military personnel who don’t get to spend this blessed day with their family and friends because they are working to protect us. Eat too much turkey and dressing, and have that second small slice of pie, and rejoice that you live in a country which still allows freedom of religion, despite the best efforts of progressives.
