D-Day remembered…

I’ve watched some of the coverage of the D-Day remembrance, including part of Obama’s rather insipid speech.    I was distracted by his little pencil moustache,  as it looked more like he didn’t bother to shave.

As always,  seeing films of the landing zones,  and having studied the German gun emplacements,  I am astonished anew that any of the allied forces survived it.    I am proud of their courage in the face of deadly fire and choppy water,  knowing that many of them could not swim.

My ancestor John Witherspoon did not pledge his life,  fortune,  and sacred honor to sign the Declaration of Independence only to have me sit in my chair and do nothing when this country was threatened.  I am grateful beyond words to him for giving me this nation,  and to all of the military personnel who have fought to keep it.   That’s one reason I write this blog.    We have inherited a great and good treasure  —   are you willing to do what it takes to keep it?

“It is the soldier, not the reporter, Who has given us freedom of the press.
It is the soldier, not the poet, Who has given us freedom of speech.
It is the soldier, not the organizer, Who has given us the freedom to demonstrate.
It is the soldier, Who salutes the flag, Who serves beneath the flag,
And whose coffin is draped by the flag, Who allows the protestor to burn the flag.
