Cenotes, por favor…

If you are fascinated by the water-filled pools created when the ceilings of limestone caverns collapse,  there are  more than a few accessible ones in Mexico.   My favorite of  this bunch is the one located in the Costco parking lot!   Congratulations to a management team which exemplified discovering a lemon during construction and making beautiful lemonade out of it.

Alone…

leave a comment »

Apparently more Americans are choosing to  travel alone.  Are they lying to interviewers?   Too embarrassed to admit they don’t have any friends?Such awful travel companions no one will go with them?   If they are truly more willing to talk to locals and be more spontaneous when solo,   we have become a very odd bunch indeed.   I have traveled a good bit of the world and have always found companions made it enjoyable and easier to  meet locals and have a less “touristy” experience.   These days I would also consider it safer,  but I guess if one can survive the rude serial gropers of TSA,  one can survive much else.

Chocolate calamity…

I-40 in Arizona,  east of Flagstaff,  was rendered impassable by a tanker truck spilling its load of  liquid chocolate.   I don’t imagine that made travellers any happier,  but I’m sure the hazmat team was quite pleased.

Worst ever…

…flight delay experience must be that of the poor passengers on an Air France flight to Shanghai who  got stuck  in Siberia for three days.  Like most air travellers,  I have had delays from time to time,  but I always had a book to read, or a decent bar or hotel to hang out in for a while.

Our world is home to some of the most beautiful streets,  roads,  and paths you can imagine.   I have seen  a few  of these  in person.   Have you visited any of these sites?

Queen Sheila…

United Airlines  has apologized  to the customer whose seat they gave away to Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee,  who is always high on the list of the most unpleasant people on the planet.  But not even a $500 travel voucher to the passenger is sufficient to make up for the airline’s cowardice in the face of the arrogance and greed of the  Congressional battleaxe.

Of course the only airline ever to stand up to Lee’s  repeated bad  behavior no longer exists,  making the rest especially wary.  The woman is a characterless clump of dumb,  but she does wield real power,  despite blaming the current situation,  entirely of her own making,  on racism.  Shame on her constituents who keep voting her back into office instead of throwing her ass to the curb where it belongs.

Move to Candela…

…and Nicola Gatta,  the mayor of this quaint medieval Italian town,  will pay you.  As an incentive,  he reminds us that the town used to be called Little Naples until the 1960’s when the bustling community began falling out of favor with tourists,  then residents.

I hope the mayor’s initiative pays off grandly so the Baroque heart of the town lives on, with a decent number of people to provide a tax base.  Since one has to live there and rent a house there,  it might be hard to arrange sufficient income to be comfortable,  but it’s not far from beaches and is set in a beautiful lush landscape,  so it might be worth a try.
