Olympic schadenfreude…

leave a comment »

Most of the Olympic hopefuls who chose to spend their time airing their hatred of  all things Trump,  usually while displaying their complete ignorance of all else,  seem to have jinxed themselves for their competitions.    Perhaps they will return stateside with an understanding of the phrase,  “Karma’s a bitch.”

2018 Olympics…

leave a comment »

The first blow-up of the Olympics is American speed skater Shani Davis,  who claimed that the U.S. team  “dishonorably tossed a coin to decide its 2018 flag bearer” and suggested that race played a part in the decision.

I have no clue as to how a coin can be tossed  ‘dishonorably”,  much less how a coin can be racist.   If it’s  “No problem”  and he “can wait until 2022”,  why is he on Twitter whining about it like a five-year old child instead of a 31-year old man.   I suppose this is where I should mention that Mr. Davis is black.   He is also stupid.   I hope his skating is a heck of a lot better than his thought process.

Yes,  I am ignoring gay figure skater Adam Rippon and Vice President Mike Pence because nobody really knows the story,  whereas Mr. Davis has obligingly pouted his way onto Twitter to display his foolishness.

Swimming through history…

leave a comment »

Have  a look  at the pictorial history of the Australian Olympics team’s swimming attire.   Focusing on the women’s side,  you can see how the gear changed from something to protect women’s modesty to high-tech designs crafted to reduce drag in the water.   When a hundredth of  a second can be the difference between gold and silver,  material and cut matter!

Department of Sports…

The USA doesn’t have one.   The closest thing is the United States Olympic Committee,  which officially organizes the athletes that represent the country at the Olympic Games.  The only federal financial support it receives if for select Paralympic military programs.

Practically every other nation at the Olympics has at least an appointed Minister of Sports,  such as the United Kingdom,  or an entire government agency devoted to sports,  like the Chinese.

Yet we continue to win,  without cheating.   You might think that liberals and assorted big-government types would take notice of this and learn from it that government  control seldom  produces the best results.   Freedom to choose what to apply yourself to,  and the help of coaches and family and some natural talent allow our Olympians to excel.

Read the story of gold medalist gymnast Simone Biles and you’ll understand.   In what other country could this young woman have succeeded so brilliantly through her own desire and will?

What they looked like…

…at the Olympics.   My,  but the athletes’  uniforms have  certainly changed, haven’t they?

Rio Olympics…

The headline of  this piece  pretty much sums up this sporting disaster.   When you manage to lose the keys to the stadium as the games are beginning,  it’s a symptom of the chaos which is certain to continue.

Small wonder that the Washington Post is experimenting  with automated story telling to cover what I have been referring to as the sewer Olympics.

Boston won’t host Olympics…

And Howie Carr is  absolutely thrilled  that Boston’s overlords will not be able to fleece taxpayers yet again.

I can not imagine why any city would want to host the modern Olympics with all the congestion and security requirements.

17 years for a gold…

Meryl Davis and Charlie White turned in a pair of nearly flawless performances to win the  first USA gold  in ice dancing.   Look at the stills and see what 17 years of intense focus does for you.

Mandarin mermaid…

If Chinese swimming phenom  Ye Shiwen  turns out to  have been  “enhanced’  like so many other Chinese athletes before her,  it may be many years before we know about it.   And that would be a pity,  because China should be shamed,  as the Russians and East Germans were,  for destroying their athletes lives.

Olympic ghost town…

Cities always tout the  economic benefits  of hosting an Olympic competition,  but few of them actually break even.   I would personally throttle the entire government if I lived in a city which tried to be host of even a single Olympics venue,   much less the whole shebang.
