Because it’s so pretty…

The Japanese have taken a plant originally native to North America,  and have created  a festival  featuring the perennial moss in fantastic designs.   It’s a bit bright for my taste,  but the flows of flowers in blooms are undeniably gorgeous.

Ghost fares…

leave a comment »

As Japan nears the fifth anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami that struck coastal towns in the northeast,  taxi drivers in the area are reporting  ghost passengers,  fares who appear to be real,  and even speak,  then vanish.   Others are also reporting some rather ghastly spectral sights,  which isn’t surprising with a death toll of more than 15,000 and over 2,000 still reported as missing.

Robo-farm…

leave a comment »

A Japanese firm is going to use robots for  intensive vertical  farming,  a futuristic system which will use humans only for planting seedlings,  which are too fragile for mechanical hands to cope with.   The plant of choice will be lettuce,  grown inside with LED lights and no pesticides,  and the operation is expected to commence in mid-2017.

America is blessed with abundant land suitable for farming a wide variety of food crops,  but Japan and many other countries are much less fortunate.   Hopefully this venture will produce insights and techniques which can be applied elsewhere.

The concept of vertical farming is a very old one,  though modern technology as refined it enormously.  I have long used cornstalks as poles for beans and vines to climb up,  and I often use taller,  short-lived plants to provide shade for smaller plants which take longer to mature and can’t take full sun early on.   Even though I grow most of my vegetables in pots, I over-plant so as to leave no space for weeds to flourish in.

Criminally stupid…

Now senior State Department officials at the U.S. Embassy in Japan have been caught  sending “sensitive” information over personal email accounts.   They apparently did not havd servers secreted in their homes.  Now it will be interesting to see what punishment they face,  since Madam Hillary has done something much worse,  and when she was Secretary of State forced  the resignation  of an Ambassador for setting up a private email service.   Did they decide that since their former boss conducted official business on an unprotected personal server,  their use of personal email would be OK?

Remember that Gen. David Petraeus was charged with giving classified information to his biographer and lover,  who had a security clearance.  As far as I can tell,  the mysterious  “black books” which were deemed so vital were the General’s personal schedules.   Sensitive,  yes,  but hardly up to the unencrypted emails containing satellite images which Hillary got,  and which the Russians and Chinese certainly also have now.

The girls teach us “NO”…

Sasha and Malia Obama were supposed to accompany Our Lady of Perpetual Dissatisfaction on her recent trip to Japan,  where she spent nearly $80,000 on  rental cars  for a side trip to a Buddhist temple in Kyoto.   Her daughters evidently declined to go,  so it is possible to say  “No”  to her  and make it stick.

Noxious neighbor…

If you live on the  southern Japanese  main island of Kyushu,  Mount Sakurajima is your neighbor,  and probably an unwelcome one,  as it has already erupted 500 times this year alone.   That’s not what I’d prefer in my backyard,  but those residents probably wouldn’t like the less amicable snakes I have to deal with occasionally.

What a wreck!

Excluding the military,  this has to be  the world’s most expensive accident.   Let it serve as a warning to you that people who can afford to drive such costly vehicles often have below-average driving skills which are completely overwhelmed by arrog
