New hack…

Not even air-gapped computers  are safe  from hackers,  as researchers in Israel have just proven by using a simple cell phone.   That means computers used in our most sensitive installations are at risk,  and our government is doing a big fat nothing about it.

Moral:  If you have electronics,  they can be hacked!

We’re all so screwed…

leave a comment »

If you’ve been using Apple or Google, you have been  at risk  for over a decade because of a flaw no one thought to fix on the front end.   If you’re not into bytes and security, suffice it to say that unless you have detected a hack attack while it was ongoing,  you never knew it happened.

First,  change all your passwords.  I change mine often,  and I don’t use a password manager,  so my exposure is always limited,  but until this flaw is fixed and spreads throughout the user world,  we are all in the direct line of fire.   No password should connect to you or your family in any way — no year of birth,  name of street you once lived on,  the name of your elementary school — NONE of that sort of stuff.   If you’re active on any social media,  there are already people lurking there to tease out personal information to use for hacking you or spamming you.

UPDATE:  The Economist has a  splendid article  explaining this,  and a cogent explanation of the unintended consequences of messing with things for reasons of national security.

Someone in San Francisco has a puckish sense of humor,  hacking electronic  traffic signs to warn of something which doesn’t exist.

Internet Explorer users alert…

If you’re using Internet Explorer as your browser,  stop  —  at least until the  security hole  gets patched  by Microsoft.   I still think Google Chrome is your best bet as far as security is concerned.

Zombie attack…

Hackers got into  the Montana Emergency Alert System and TV viewers got a warning that “dead bodies are rising from their graves and attacking the living.”   That was undoubtedly more interesting that the State of the Union address,  about which I’ll say more later.

teaches that YOU DO NOT OPEN EMAIL FROM ANYONE YOU DON’T KNOW!   Especially if it has an attachment.  Any employee who does so should be fired, and that  includes NATO personnel,  most particularly the top brass.

Stuxnet cyber-bomb…

Someone appears to have  determined that the Stuxnet virus which damaged Iran’s centrifuges was built by people as clever as the armies of cyber hackers China and Russia and such employ to attack the cyber world.   Yes, hackers design their malware the same way, but they generally have a single target in mind.
