Roger Ailes, R.I.P.

leave a comment »

The founder and CEO of FOX News  has died.   I suspect that his recent ouster on the basis of allegations of sexual misconduct had more to do with the personal political views of Rupert Murdoch’s sons than with truth and justice.  After all,  that is what they have done in their jobs as CEO and co-chairman of Fox News’ parent company,  21st Century Fox,  and they appear to be busily destroying the FOX brand.

Democrats hated Roger Ailes because he was effective — a cardinal sin if you dare to promote less than progressive views.  A lot of people  admired him and what he created.   Count me among them.

UPDATE:  Some views from others,  beginning with  Ken McIntyre,  then Steve Peoples,  and  Rush Limbaugh,  along with  Pres. George  H.W. Bush.   Shepard Smith had a  more personal  take on the death of his mentor from complications resulting from a fall.

UPDATE:  And one more from Andrew Ferguson,  here.

UPDATE:  And a summation of what Ailes wrought,  from Jonah Goldberg,  here.

I’m not sure it will take Murdoch’s liberal  sons as  long as five years to destroy what Ailes created.

Good golly, Miss Molly…

Molly Henneberg of FOX News has decided her little girl is more important than  the job she has held and loved for over a decade.   Good for her for putting her family first because it was the right thing for her to do.   Successful women always have difficult choices to make,  although I freely admit that for some,  family life is far less important than their career.   That has long been true for many men,  in no small measure because their wives want the benefits of high salaries,  then  those same women complain that the mate doesn’t spend enough time with them.

Since FOX has offered to make her a freelance journalist,  I expect we’ll see her from time to time.

FOX dominates…

leave a comment »

FOX News  blew all  the competition away on election night,  handily beating not just the cable channels but also the broadcast channels.  If you don’t want to read the Baltimore Sun’s David Zurawik  column,  this short piece from  FOX will give you the flavor.

The problem for the other outlets is that FOX actually does try to be fair and balanced.   Even the opinion slots have liberal,  progressive,  and sometimes left-wing nut jobs on.

If you’re really pressed for time,  examine  these two headlines  and ponder the difference.

Adding still more woe is that Bret Baier’s Special Report  has surpassed   ABC’s World News Tonight with David Muir in five key markets across the country in household viewers.   He also topped CBS’ Evening News with Scott Pelley.   This is a really big deal.

FOX News on top…

FOX News was the  biggest winner  on last Tuesday night,  crushing its cable competitors as well as broadcast stations.

Loser alert…

I read with amusement that Media Matters has  declared victory  over FOX News and is moving on to other targets.   That is a standard move on the Left when it loses a fight,  and polls indicate quite clearly that FOX remains on top despite the vicious vitriol and voluminous spittle from the Left.

FOX more balanced…

Of course FOX News is  more balanced  than MSNBC   —   and practically every other news outfit.   People can tune in to hear both sides when they tire of hearing the same side presented in multiple voices.

FOX News most and least…

If 34% of those polled  trust FOX the most,  and another 34% trust it the least,  it seems to me that FOX is getting it right,  and has earned its  “fair and balanced”  motto.
