Dogs at polling stations…

leave a comment »

The Brits allow dogs at polling places.   Big Girl would love it,  but her vigorously wagging plumy tail would clear the tables and probably bruise toddlers accidentally.   The main thing is that the Brits have some awesomely adorable canine friends,  as  witnessed here.

As in America,  some people  take their responsibility to vote more seriously than others,  even when they don’t understand the get out the vote campaigns.  After all,  I wouldn’t be thrilled to hear I was supposed to vote to celebrate a woman stupid enough to throw herself in front of a race horse to draw attention to her  suffrage movement.

Dirty dogs!

Most dogs think  mud and gunk  are just different toys to be played with and enjoyed to the fullest when available.   Their owners’ views are colored by the fact that the humans have to clean it all up!

Here are some  simple tips  for deciphering the body language of your dog or cat.   Having owned one or the other for decades,  I can say that these rules hold up well for the vast majority of normal animals.

Praise vs bacon…

leave a comment »

Your dog will probably work harder to  receive praise  from you than he will for treats.   Researchers at Emory University have actually studied this,  and I have found it to be true based on experience with my own dogs,  all of whom also very much enjoyed getting treats.

The interesting things is that most mammals have much the same reactions and motivations.

Bad puppy!

leave a comment »

Jack Russell terriers are notoriously destructive because they have a super-high energy level.   If you don’t present them with n activity,  they will find their own,  and odds are you won’t appreciate it.   This is one very bad puppy,  but you have to laugh at its pretense of innocence even when caught red-handed.

Odds are…

…if you’re raised with a pair of dogs,  you’ll tend to think you are a dog too,  even if you’re actually a raccoon.   These  pix prove  that domesticated dogs are the most adaptable critters in the world.

Happy dogs!

I don’t know if scientists have ever done a study to determine why dogs love  sticking their heads  out of vehicle windows,  but I expect it has something to do with the enormous variety of smells that drinking the wind at speed presents to them.  Big Girl is always happy to stick her snout out of my truck’s vent windows,  and if I leave my window down far enough, she will put her head atop mine to get at least her nose out.
