Prepping the rich…

leave a comment »

This article  on how to prepare for disaster if you’re rich is written in a slightly tongue-in-cheek style which I found quite amusing.  It’s also refreshing to know that the really rich will have things the rest of us might need,  and that despite paying over a grand a night,  they will be largely unprepared to prevent us from taking those things.   Yes, the really rich will have private security,  but that will last only as long as the money and food does,  and money has little value when you need food and shelter.

A crisis as a goal?

leave a comment »

Quin Hillyer thinks that is  the true goal  of His Oneness.   Don’t discount it merely because the concept is difficult to wrap your head around.

Now that  one of the  credit rating agencies has downgraded the USA,  I think we’ll see some proof of Hillyer’s premise,  because the agency is not concerned about the debt ceiling,  but the debt load.

Swine vs. seasonal…

leave a comment »

An interesting  report out of Sweden says the seasonal flu is killing more people than H1N1 is.     Could that be why individual US states have already stopped reporting new cases of the swine version?   And where in big media have you read that a secondary bacterial infection has been responsible for the majority of deaths in otherwise healthy adults with H1N1?

I’m beginning to wonder if Rahm Emanuel’s belief that you should never let a crisis go to waste is leading the administration to hype H1N1 to portray the government as savior.   I expected them to take full credit for the pandemic response systems which the Bush Administration put in place.  You youngsters should remember that the National Civil Defense system grew out of World War I,  but was at its height during the Cold War with the threat of nuclear-armed missiles from the Soviet Union.

I’m not a fan of Wikipedia,  but it does have a decent entry on the system,  which faded into obscurity and defunding after the Cold War,  and has now been wholly supplanted by Homeland Security.    Oddly enough,  the first county in the nation to have adequate shelter space and basic supplies for its citizens was Montgomery County,  Alabama,  largely because county officials  and the mayor of Montgomery put an extremely practical farmer and aviator in charge of the task.

Obamanomics…

leave a comment »

Obama has announced that we  “can’t afford ‘Bubble-and-Bust’ cycles, but don’t worry — with his economic plans, we’ll be in a  “bust” status for decades.

US households suffered a record 9% drop in wealth in the 4th quarter of 2008.   The Blackstone Group’s CEO says 45% of the world’s wealth has been destroyed.

But wait –  now His Oneness claims the economic crisis isn’t as bad as we think!   And adviser Larry Summers is telling us we suffer from an “excess of fear”, which his boss worked so diligently to create.

Let’s see, His Oneness spent 2 YEARS telling us how awful it was, and the day after his election — I mean ascendancy — he began telling us it was a CRISIS, a DISASTER, and ONLY THE GOVERNMENT could save us.

And only fools believe that His Oneness has the slightest intention of actually saving us.  The only thing which matters to him is that he change America into a country he and his First Lady can finally be proud of.

One man who isn’t fooled is South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, who delivers a blast at His Oneness referencing Zimbabwe.

I’d be worried about the Sharpton/Jackson race-baiters, except I doubt they read much financial news.  Oh, wait — I forgot about pinch-hitter Rep. James Clyburn.

Governing by crisis…

Kevin O’Brien has a good column on his take of Obama’s governing style:

http://www.cleveland.com.nyud.net:8090/obrien/index.ssf/2009/01/kevin_obrien_america_under_oba.html

and the excellent advice to get angry, not fearful.  Judging by conversations with my Congress critters’ offices, a lot of us have already taken it, but we’ll need to stiffen the pliable spines of the usual Senate Republican squishes.

You get the day off for the Super Bowl, then it’s back to the phones and keyboards,  Patriots!
