Disease ravages olive groves…

leave a comment »

Fires and wars didn’t kill them,  but xylella  fastidiosa,  a deadly bacterial pathogen that has no known cure and which began  infesting olive  trees in Salento,  Italy at the end of 2013,  may do the trick.   This region produces some excellent olive oil,  so I hope researchers can figure out how to stop this nasty bacteria before the region’s olive growers lose their livelihoods and a huge piece of history.

Plague older than thought…

leave a comment »

DNA analysis of Bronze Age teeth has revealed that the plague has been infecting humans more than twice  as long  as scientist have thought.   The bacteria was originally spread by human-to-human contact until it mutated and gained a foothold in the flea population,  which led to bubonic plague or the Black Death.

Modern medicine is full of dangerous and evil things,  but it has the ability to cure this destroyer of human populations.   Modernity has its benefits.  Now if we could just convince the enviroNazis that providing basic sanitation and clean drinking water to the Third World would be a far better use of money than wasting it on non-existent global warming or the newly convenient catch-phrase climate change….

Blood Falls…

That’s the name given to the red water coming out of the face of Taylor Glacier into Lake Bonney  in Antarctica.   Scientists have discovered the water is colored  by  a bacteria  in the water,  which is now believed to be part of a larger hydraulic system connecting the lakes in the regions Dry Valleys.

Some dog owners like to receive kisses from their dogs.  If you’re one of them,  you  may want  to reconsider.

Apparently the medical profession has been  proven wrong,  yet again.   Don’t you wonder what else they don’t know?

Do you regularly clean out your belly button?    Apparently,  few people do,  thus leaving an amazing accumulation of not only lint,  but also a wide  variety of bacteria.   Go forth and check your umbilicus!

Tooth saver?

Dentists won’t like  this new discovery,  but patients certainly will.   Let’s hope it doesn’t turn out to have any detrimental side effects.
