Fairfax County, Virginia is stuffing the envelopes that absentee ballots are mailed out in with Democratic political material, including a letter from the state’s governor advising a vote for the Democratic ticket and slamming the Republican one.
This is not an accident. It’s not even a mistake. It is deliberate electioneering by the Virginia Department of Elections. Under Virginia law, you can not hand out sample ballots inside polling areas, so how could anyone imagine it would be fine to include it in an ballot? I did not read the pertinent law, but I can not think how this would not be at least a gross violation of rules and procedures. Furthermore, the same people who believe this is okay to do will have little hesitation about trashing an absentee ballot if they don’t agree with the votes cast.
If you live in a state with paper ballots, good for you. If you don’t, watch them all like hawks and scream the rafters down if you see anything at your polling station which looks even a tiny bit off to you. Look up the number of the election officials so you can call them on the spot. I have been a poll watcher before, and was amazed by the attempts at various forms of intimidation and cheating and trickery I witnessed over six hours.
