Time for Thorns

An independent view on life.

A real gem…

This is  the largest chunk of jade I’ve ever seen,  and the only piece larger is a carved statue in China.   One hopes the miners who discovered this huge deposit have earned a bonus,  but since it was found in Burma  —  oh, it’s called Myanmar now,  isn’t it?  —   I view that as unlikely.

Since jadeite is responsible for half the country’s GDP,  this find is certain to provide a significant boost for the economy,  though those in China who turn the discovery into jewelry will take a big cut of the profits.
