Is this our daddy?

Ever heard of Luca?   Me neither,  but it means the Last Universal Common Ancestor,  in this case a single-cell,  bacterium-like organism thought to have lived on Earth four billion years ago,

There is a huge disagreement among scientists about whether this organism was a half-alive creature dependent on chemicals in its environment,  or a more sophisticated organism because it could synthesize proteins.  The debate is far from over,  but it certainly is interesting.
