Rare is mundane…

Even if you’re not a fan of mathematics,  much less the science of statistics,  you’ll find  this piece  by Faye Flam interesting.   Her point is that our universe is superabundant with possibilities and potentialities,  and therefore it is more likely that  “rare”  events will re-occur.

We all use statistics in our everyday lives,  even though we may be unaware of it.   I have a friend who often hurts his fingers when wielding a hammer.   It doesn’t matter that he is impatient,  always in a hurry and takes too big of a swing,  despite innumerable suggestions for correcting the problem.  We all know that if he has a hammer,  the odds are heavily against his fingers surviving the encounter unscathed.   If you habitually speed while driving a red car,  you should be able to figure out that you will be ticketed far more often than your Aunt Betty sedately driving her gray sedan to church.

Father’s Day in Chicago…

resulted in  56 shot and 13 killed.   Chicago is still run by Democrats,  despite their lengthy record of abject failure.   Do remember that Chicago has some of the strictest gun laws in the nation,  which should tell you how well gun control laws work.
