Muhammad Ali, R.I.P.
I’ve been expecting this news for some years now, with the boxing legend suffering from Parkinson’s and brain damage and a variety of health issues, including a fondness for the bottle. The former Cassius Clay lost one of his titles because he refused his draft notice, although the courts later restored it.
He was likely the best heavyweight boxer of all time. It’s certainly difficult to imagine another will ever top him in the sweet science. Someone else may claim to be “the greatest“, but surely none will come up with as memorable a line as “float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.”
His obits will be filled with praise, but his charm and entertainment value was insufficient to cause everyone to overlook his boastful and shallow nature. I find it quite fitting that another shallow man will be delivering Ali’s eulogy.
