May Day 2016…

leave a comment »

Los Angeles was full of May Day  protesters  yesterday.   So did other places around  the  world.   Law enforcement and governments displayed varied reactions.

The occasion has come a very long way from its origins,  which  stemmed from the pre-Christian holiday of Beltane, a celebration of rebirth and fertility.   It began in America as a workers’ campaign for an eight-hour day,  but was quickly taken over by various socialist societies in the latter half of the 19th Century,  later joined by anarchists.   It is still a celebration of spring in a few places,  but most know it as a day of labor protests and a showcase for socialists and communist activists claiming to represent workers’ rights and creating mayhem..
