Kepler spacecraft emergency…

leave a comment »

This is not the first crisis the Kepler spacecraft has suffered since its launch in 2009,  but because it is now 75 million miles from Earth,  this may be  its worst.   Distance matters when you’re trying to identify the problem which caused this planet hunter to go into emergency mode,  not to mention the eighteen minutes it will take for any commands to reach the plucky pioneer.

One hopes NASA engineers can pull another rabbit out of the hat so Kepler can continue on and perhaps find another 5,000 planets.
