Letter by balloon…

leave a comment »

A  145 year old  letter discovered in Australia’s National Archives has sparked interest.   The missive from a man to his mother  was flown out of Paris by hot air balloon during the Prussian siege in 1870,  and the Archives wants to know what happened to the writer and his family.

How did it get to Australia from its original destination of  Pont-Audemer?    No one knows,  much less how it eventually landed in the Archives collection.   Can you help?

Disease ravages olive groves…

leave a comment »

Fires and wars didn’t kill them,  but xylella  fastidiosa,  a deadly bacterial pathogen that has no known cure and which began  infesting olive  trees in Salento,  Italy at the end of 2013,  may do the trick.   This region produces some excellent olive oil,  so I hope researchers can figure out how to stop this nasty bacteria before the region’s olive growers lose their livelihoods and a huge piece of history.
