Star Wars science..

with 2 comments

Some of the science and technology in the Star Wars franchise have become real  over the four decades it has been around.   Lasers,  energy weapons,  and droids are in use now,  even though they may not work precisely as envisioned in the movies.

On the other hand,  some of the science  remains firmly  ensconced in  he realm of fantasy,  as experts claim hyperdrives are  “implausible”.   Of course,  that’s what they said about airplanes,  and space travel,  isn’t it?   Still,  the movies are a ripe source for study and discussion by scientists and chemists and we movie-goers.

  1. The lightsaber, aka the coolest thing in the series, is probably also the most obsolete. We had metal swords and stopped using them when we invented metal guns. I assume that people with laser guns would just use laser guns and not rely on laser swords.

Although they do address that when Han says something like, “Give me a blaster any day…”

  2. We humans are always quick to adopt more efficient ways of destroying each other, aren’t we? And yet we often prize the old relics of war. We are an odd species, to be sure.
