Two popes step to sainthood…

leave a comment »

Pope John XXIII and Pope John Paul II will be elevated  to sainthood  tomorrow,  and you need not be a Catholic to appreciate the importance of the ceremony,  especially since this will be the  first double  canonization ever.   Both of these men made  a mark in the world.

Assuming you haven’t already decamped to Rome,  you can  watch it here.f

Kerry fails again…

leave a comment »

Secretary of State John Kerry is married to a wealthy woman who could surely afford a decent dog trainer,  since her husband clearly  hasn’t worked  with his own dog.   Ben appears to be a happy,  excited yellow Lab,  ready to play.   I have had two yellow Labs,  and I could have taken them both into a strange auditorium and told them to sit or lie down,  and they would have done so without objection.

Even Big Girl,  who was a major league wild child at a year old,  would have behaved better than poor Ben.  In fact,  jumping up on people for attention was the first thing I trained her not to do by kneeing her in the chest,  making the dreaded “aah” sound and then ignoring her.  She quickly unlearned that behavior,  and substituted a big grin and a furiously wagging tail,  and even a play bow if necessary.  If she wants to inspect you now,  she simply stands up on her hind legs and balances, looking most people in the face as she does so.   It seems to impress the heck out of strangers,  since she performs the movement easily and holds it for more than a minute when she wishes, no mean feet for a 100-pound dog.

Ben’s behavior isn’t his fault,  but that of Mr. Kerry,  who obviously has no hope of controlling anyone else if he can’t do the basics with his own canine,  especially since,  unlike BG and Putin, Labs are notoriously eager to please.   Poor Ben’s master is obviously no better at dog diplomacy than he is at the human sort.

Hagel’s fail…

leave a comment »

Russia  won’t talk  to Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel.   The Pentagon has used its channels to the Russian military to try and facility communication between Hagel and his Russian counterpart,  but thus far to no avail.   How much clearer can it be that Russia has decided it can simply ignore the entire Obama Administration and dismiss anything it does?

Pro-Russian toughs,  undoubtedly directed by Russia, have now seized a busload of international  military monitors,  and what do we hear from Hi Oneness?   Crickets chirping have more to say

How to tell when someone is lying…

leave a comment »

This is an  interesting article  on determining if someone is lying. I view the last line as the best point  — that if you over-think the question,  you’re less likely to be able to correctly assess truthfulness.   Some people can indeed pick up the micro-expressions,  with or without training,  but most people can react to them without being consciously aware of having seen,  much less  recognized them.

We humans are equipped to recognize the same and the other,  the true and the false,  because those specimens who couldn’t are now classified as extinct.  Unfortunately,  our genetic inheritance is being drummed out of us by modern life,  and our reliance on technology and what we are told is science makes us less likely to rely on the cues our primitive senses pick up on.   Even worse,  so many of us walk around talking and texting that our cone of awareness is only a couple of feet. That alone makes your world a more dangerous place.

Are you a gentleman?

leave a comment »

Country Life is launching its Gentleman of the Year Awards,  and has a rather tongue-in-cheek  description  of the qualities the man they’re searching for should display.   Still,  there are sound precepts and rules to be considered,  and many should apply to ladies as well.

Suffice it to say that neither His Oneness nor Our Lady of Perpetual Dissatisfaction even remotely qualify for inclusion on any list contemplating refinement.

Drinking age past its prime?

leave a comment »

Camille Paglia goes on a  tear arguing  that the 21-year-old  legal drinking age has outlived its usefulness,  and never had its intended result when MADD stampeded politicians into passing it. in 1984.   I agree with her.   My parents would always let me have a sip of whatever they were drinking,  so there was no big mystery about alcohol.   Yes,  drunk people do stupid things and cause trouble,  but so do other people under other influences.

Regulators overpaid…

The people who  regulate banking  make more than those they regulate,  considerably more.,  and few of them are being paid so highly for any special skill.   The staff salaries will make your eyes bleed.
