Human Rights Watch blasted…

leave a comment »

The  founder of Human Rights Watch has issued startling criticism of his own organization.   He is now chairman emeritus,  but why has it taken him so long to realize the group’s bias against Israel?

Nina Shea doesn’t think he went nearly far  enough.

Afghan pressure…

leave a comment »

It is extraordinary for  a  Defense Secretary to come out with a statement that a US decision can’t wait for Afghan legitimacy,  especially since Bob Gates is a very careful,  measured man.   He is certainly aware of the military’s  frustration with its new commander-in-chief,   and I can’t imagine he’s pleased by Rahm Emanuel’s  blindsiding him by asserting it would be “irresponsible” for Obama to decide on Gen. McChrystal’s troop request before the Afghan election is sorted out.    I promise you he was not happy that Sen.  John Kerry did get a heads-up,  using the same excuse for indecison as Emanuel did.

The White House is behaving as if Pres. Karzai’s corruption is some startling development,  which the stellar reporter and former Green Beret Michael Yon points out,  has long been known.

James Taranto of the WSJ growls that His Oneness voting “present” on Afghanistan would be an improvement.

And suddenly the White House is announcing that His Oneness may make his decision sooner than the Twelfth of Never.    It’s very hard to find a solution which allows you to claim credit for any success while escaping blame for any failure.   Has the White House decided that Karzai will make a suitably useful sin-eater?

Or did the machine read the  CNN poll showing half the country disagrees with Obama on the issues?    Or perhaps they’re spooked by the Rasmussen daily tracking poll showing its boss with a Presidential Approval Index rating of -13.    That’s only a point above the lowest level ever recorded for Obama,   and it’s also the sixth straight day in negative double digits.

Health care reform skirmish…

leave a comment »

The first salvo has been fired in a  skirmish before the last health care reform battle,  and to my astonishment,  the liberals did not prevail.

Democrats,  encouraged by His Oneness to think they could just put it on the government’s credit card,  attempted to bribe doctors by undoing the Medicare reimbursement cuts put into the health bill to make it “cost” less.

It failed,  with Republicans insisting it be paid for and pointing out why it should be considered as part of the health reform deal.  Senate Whip Dick Durbin is whining that the mean old Republicans  “believe they can derail health care reform by defeating the doctor fix,”   but I hear that Harry Reid’s head has not exploded as yet.

What I found quite amazing was that Reid actually admitted that if the planned Medicare payment cuts occurred,  fewer doctors would accept Medicare patients.   Haven’t Democrats spent 6 months denying that doctors would leave in droves if they had to operate under a new system which penalized them for practicing too much medicine?

It’s a tiny win,  but a win nonethless.

Economic caution…

leave a comment »

I don’t pretend to be an expert on investments,  but this September piece on insider trading strikes me as a sensible caution sign.   So does this current  post at The Corner

One thing I’m quite sure of is that the stimulus hasn’t stimulated much of anything besides government growth and liberal lard fantasies.    Every time I drive to town I notice a few more vacant storefronts.    One of my favorite little hole-in-the-wall Chinese restaurants closed a few months ago.    The shopping mall in the next larger city has lost some national chains.    A long-time friend has been out of work for nearly 6 months now,  and she has decades of experience in office work.

The small business owners I know are working their fannies off trying not to fire anyone or reduce hours.    A couple of them have just about decided to close up shop and retire.   All they know is that more people have less income and no one is in the mood to hire when all they see from the Obama  administration is a never-ending geyser of red ink and skyrocketing taxes.

The wealth-eaters are winning.
